The I-131 Treatment

targets and destroys the abnormal thyroid tissue while sparing the normal tissue that is not over-producing hormones.

Welcome to the Cat Company

The Cat Company has been treating hyperthyroid cats using radioactive iodine for more than fifteen years. Throughout these years of experience, we have learned what cats and their loving owners truly need when treating this disease. The Cat Company would like to make the following four points regarding the welfare of your beloved cat.

First, if your cat suffers from a hyperactive thyroid, you should know that it’s a serious condition that cats really struggle with, but it’s also very treatable.

Second, I want you to know that one of the best understood, safest, surest and most gentle treatments for feline hyperthyroidism is radioactive iodine, also known as I-131 therapy. (How this totally painless therapy works really is a natural miracle!)

Third, I predict that the only difficulty your cat might have with this extremely gentle treatment is something very much like what you and I call homesickness. Your pet will be spending 48 hours with us.  Cats (and especially senior cats) are pretty attached to their day-to-day rituals, routines and surroundings. Our strategy here at The Cat Company is to keep our guests busy with great things for a cat to see and to eat. They’re so engaged with fun stuff, they forget to be anxious. I call it our bed and breakfast therapy, and we’re really good at it.

Fourth and finally, since it will take some very specialized tests for us to be sure your cat has hyperthyroidism, The Cat Company only accepts patients that have been referred to us by a veterinarian. I already work with quite a few of the vets in the area, and I’d love the chance to talk with yours.
